1983 The rate of sterilizations was greatest in Oregon during the 1920s and the 1930s, but sterilizations still occurred after the end of World War II, until the repeal of the law in 1983. In Governor John Kitzhaber’s 2002 apology on behalf of the state, he noted that a total of 2,648 people were sterilized: 65% were women, and 35% were men.
