Following the successful lawsuit for wrongful confinement and sterilization brought by Leilani Muir against the Province of Alberta, there was much attention focused on the longstanding chair of Alberta's Eugenics Board, John MacEachran. In April 1998 the Department of Philosophy accepted the recommendation of its "MacEachran Subcommittee" as departmental policy, as specified in a document commonly referred to as the MacEachran Report. The report, authored by three professors in the department--David Kahane; David Sharp, and Martin Tweedale--drew heavily on the findings from the court case and introduced departmental policies regarding the removal of MacEachran's name from academic prizes and raising awareness about the history of eugenics in Alberta.
