Michigan is the first US State to introduce Compulsory Sterilization Bill

May 16, 1897. Michigan becomes first American state to introduce a compulsory sterilization bill. However, the law did not pass. The proposed law, which called for the mandatory castration of defined types of criminals and "degenerates," fails to pass in the legislature but sets a precedent for similar laws.
