April 17, 1982. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the only Charter of Rights entrenched in the Canadian Constitution, comes into force on April 17th. It forms the first part of the Constitution Act, 1982. According to section 52 of the Constitution act, "every law that is inconsistent with the Constitution is, to the extent of the inconsistency, of no force and effect."
