June 18, 2003. In 2003, a group of scholars began meeting at the University of Alberta to discuss issues surrounding the history of eugenics in Western Canada. They expanded to include Field Law, the law office defending the sterilization survivors, and sterilizations survivors themselves.
The group officially formed in 2005 as the Alberta Consortium for the History of Eugenics (ACHE), and developed the "What Sorts of People Should there Be" network under the leadership of the principle investigator, Rob Wilson.
Important to the organization, and the subsequent CURA team, were inclusivity (of those affected by eugenics, and people of all kinds), to promote education of the general public, to properly locate the history of eugenics in Alberta, and to advance the study of history.
