2009. Freedom Tour is a documentary created by the People First of Canada and the National Film Board of Canada. It focuses on life within an institution drawing on patient testimonies, old photos, and video footage.
The goal of People First of Canada is deinstitutionalization. They believe that every individual has the right to live in their community, and their goal is to close mental institutions in hopes of finding alternative methods to care for patients with developmental disabilities. On March 31, 2009, the documentary Freedom Tour was shown in Ontario to mark the closing of the final three institutions in the province. It has also been played nationally and internationally.
