Government demolishes long vacant Valley View Centre buildings and closes others that are not needed
2005. In 2005, the government began to demolish buildings at Valley View Centre (VVC) in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan that had been long vacant or that the staff and residents no longer needed. The VVC was formerly the Saskatchewan Training School, which was created for people with intellectual disabilities.
For years, the resident population at the centre had been declining as services for people with disabilities moved more towards integration, as a result many cottages and other buildings sat unused. Rather than pay for their upkeep, the government razed them to the ground. In addition, they filled the swimming pool in and let weeds take over the facility’s baseball diamond.
While there is still a nexus of buildings that composes what is left of VVC, outlying cottages that used to be sleeping quarters for residents are no longer there. If they are, such as the “Poplar” cottages, the government uses them for storage.
