January 10, 1929. The Chinook Advance article “Increase in Mental Cases” reported an increase of 1,000 patients in mental institutions between the start of 1928 and 1929, which resulted in increased concern from the government and social organizations. The article also identifies measures that had been taken regarding mental hygiene. Additional discussions of mental hygiene in the province of Saskatchewan and Canada, in general, were added. Studies that had been conducted elsewhere in Canada were being considered in Alberta. The article concludes with a statement regarding the sterilization of individuals released from mental institutions under the Sterilization Act of Alberta.
