March 15, 1928. Dr. Geo H. Wade, the Mayor of Hanna, Alberta, wrote an article titled “The Sterilization Bill”, which was published in the Wetaskiwin Times. Wade reports George Hoadley’s passing of the Sterilization Bill, which Wade believes was a necessary government action for Alberta and should have been considered by the rest of the provinces. Wade presents one main concern about sterilization - he believes that if women were to be sterilized they could become prostitutes and the spread of venereal disease would become a problem. He saw desexualization as a more effective solution, if it were possible. Wade also advocated for health certificates being provided prior to marriage certificates, as to prevent the marriage and eventual birth of potentially mentally deficient children.
